Statement on Refugee Boat Disaster
Off the coast of Italy, on the dawn of the 26th of February 2023 an overloaded boat carrying refugees sank. As of writing this over 60 people have been confirmed dead; with dozens, possibly hundreds still unaccounted for.
This is an unspeakable human tragedy, the people and government of Vladastock are appalled by this horrid disaster. These victims have our deepest sympathies and our solidarity.
And yet, that is simply not enough. Since 2014, 26,000 human beings have lost their lives attempting to cross the Mediterranean. Like those lost in last week’s disaster, all these people were humans. They had dreams, and aspirations. They had failings and weaknesses. They felt the rush of joy when seeing loved ones, and the bitterness of saying goodbye.
Their only crime was seeking a better life for themselves. Escaping persecution, war, famine, and corruption.
This cannot go on…
The governments of Europe have to do better. They must reform their immigration and refugee systems to accommodate those who flee untenable situations.
The governments of Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and others across the region must stop their attacks on their own citizens. These crusades of evil have spurred the mass evacuation that has been ongoing since 2014.
And finally, we all must do better. No matter where you are in the world. You have the power to stop the demonization and hatred levied against refugees and oppressed groups. Demand better from your political leaders, your co-workers, your families, your friends and yourself. Only by using our collective power can we hope to make the world more just, more compassionate, and freer.
